The Invasion of Canada was a major military initiative by the American Army. Canada was invaded in 1775 to gain control of Quebec which was under British authority. Once Quebec was under America's control they would be able to convince the French living there to join their side againts Britain.
Summary
The Invasion of Canada was lead by two expeditions. The first expedition was lead by Richard Montgomery. Montgomery took his expedition from Fort Ticonderoga to Fort St. Johns. This was a very harsh journey since Montgomery's men were not experienced with sailing ships in white water. ort and one of Quebec's main defensive points, was captured by Montgomery's Army in Novemember. This forced Guy Carleton, the defending British General, to flee to inner Quebec. The second expedition was lead by the famous traitor, Benedict Arnold. Arnold left Cambridge, Massachussetes in September, and lead his troops through heavy wilderness, known today as Maine, which caused them to be starving and have lack of supplies and equiptment. The two expiditions met up in Decemember and attacked Quebec City using a two-pronged attack stratagy. They attacked the city December 31, 1775, during a harsh blizzard which caused vision to be impared and the weapons to not properly function. In total, there were 1200 troops fighting in the battle. The Continental Army lost the battle for Quebec City. Arnold was wounded and Montgomery was killed. The overall casualties of the battle were 520. The American losses were 500, the British losses were only 20. The weapons used during the battle were muskets, bayonets, and cannons.
